Tl;dr - Escapism is ruining the www.
It’s pretty rediculous that it takes threatening the internet in order to AT LEAST spark the general public’s interest in becoming involved in the fight against a corporocratic war against U.S. citizens. Not the passing of such things as the Patriot Act, Citizens United, or the NDAA, but no, THE FUCKING FACEBOOKS AND LOLCATS AND GOD DAMN WHATEVER HAVE YOU!
I understand that the internet is a very powerful tool for those of us fortunate enough to have access to it, but by simple observation it’s not difficult to see that we truly take it for granted and even abuse it A LOT.
We meet and interact with people across the world, easily accessing and exchanging information with a few clicks of a button. The potential for creating such a powerful voice as seen in whats happened over the course of this past week alone speaks to that.
Now answer me this: why isn’t this repeatable when it comes to issues outside the internet? There are real results we can make happen if only we could STOP FUCKING AROUND AND INDULGING IN REALLY REALLY STUPID AND WASTEFUL STUFF on the internet.
“But, Eric, people like to use their personal web pages as a form of self-expression, you can’t deny them that!”
WELL HEY A FUCKING PICTURE OF A GOD DAMN CAT OH SHIT ITS SO FUCKING CUTE I MAY VOMIT, OH SHIT AND GRAMMATICALLY SKEWED TEXT THAT READS IN A FUNNY VOICE OH GAWSH IT DESCRIBES THIS PICTURE PURRFECTLY THIS IS EXACTLY HOW I FEEL TOO!
Tell me, just exactly how does a picture of some sunset with the silhouette of a couple holding hands with some phrase that the realization some teenager had about a common conception anyone can make about life through simply fucking thinking for a minute get nearly one hundred some odd thousand “reblogs” but anything that has to do with some SERIOUS FUCKING ISSUES not even grab a hundredth of a percentage of that?
Maybe I’m not following all the great informative tumblr blogs or maybe I’m just now realizing that the tumblr community is just full of a bunch of escapist entertainment, but holy shit when something like SOPA/PIPA comes along then OH NOW EVERYONES INTERESTED! And I’m sure most of you who have raised your voice and helped spread awareness of it will probably hear about Lamar Smith, author of your beloved SOPA, and his new attempt at again STICKING HIS FINGER STRAIGHT UP THE ASS OF THE INTERNET. H.R. 1981. Do your own research, READ IT, voice your own opinion, and take action.
And while the Senate will be busy attacking the internet throughout the year, hopefully you come to value it more than you ever have before, and maybe even start caring about something else besides some fucking cats.
This requires no thought.
